In the first Roman History Block, we started with the founding of Rome and learned up through the death of Julius Caesar and the surrender of the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
In this second block, we continue the saga, hearing of Rome’s wide expansion into central and western Europe, its stalemate with the unconquerable Germanic peoples, its Christianization, and its ultimate collapse.
From there, we journey eastward to discover the rise of Islam, its Golden Age, and the way its developments would shape European and world history for centuries to come. In this transition, we also hear about the fascinating relationship between Harun al-Rashid and Charlemagne, the ability of Christian pilgrims to visit the Holy Land, and its subsequent decay leading eventually to the Crusades.
Finally, we end the block with Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of kings and champion of women’s rights and knightly chivalry.
