Teen empowerment will take center stage in this ongoing live class.
Adolescence is a delicate time where our children begin pulling away in greater self-determination. Their soul lives deepen, they spend more time alone in their rooms, and they tell us less and less about what’s going on. This can go in different directions, and we all want our children to choose healthy, virtuous paths. Yet, as parents they listen to us less and less, and they start needing expert guides outside of the home to look up to.
To that end, we are offering an ongoing weekly teen zoom class this year. Its purpose is to raise resilient, healthy, and inspired teens who will go on to live lives they love. This can be considered a coaching class with Mr. Andrea as coach/mentor. The group will use book studies to stimulate not only discussion but practical exercises the students will be asked to take into their daily lives. We will begin with the following texts:
Dying to Be Me by Anita Moorjani
This is a deeply moving and inspirational story about a woman who grew up being bullied and suffering from cultural conditioning. As an adult, she contracted a deadly form of cancer and died. On the other side, she learned profound lessons about self-love and its connections to health and manifesting the life she actually desired. She came to not only teach but also embody the lesson.
The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino
This is one of the best stories ever told, in my opinion. It is about a Middle Eastern trader who starts in humble means, learns the mysteries of salesmanship through character transformation, and rises to become the greatest salesman in the world. However, this story is not really about business. It’s about character development, initiative, and generosity, and that makes it useful not only for people who want to go into business but for anybody who wants to take their life in hand and shape it according to how they see fit.
The Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner
This remarkable story of overcoming enormous adversity is about a single father’s journey from homelessness to becoming a successful stockbroker. It paints a picture of how resilient perseverance can help one accomplish his or her dreams. From there, we will decide as a group where we want to go next.
Each session will last about an hour beginning with artistic work like music, artistic speech, and/or movement followed by a discussion of the week's chapter and review of summaries. Following this, we will work on exercises like mindfulness, vision boards, journal prompts, etc.
