The beginnings of geometry done in a freehand way
Pythagoras and his theorem
Mysteries and fascinations of numbers
The qualities of number (numbers as beings)
This block is the students’ first formal introduction to geometry. However, why do we do it freehand? It is good to learn something like geometry intuitively, first, so that it may better be understood intellectually, later. What the hands do now the mind will understand later. Wait until sixth grade to use the precision tools of compass and straightedge.
In the second half of this block, we recapitulate a number of discoveries made by mathematicians over the centuries. It challenges students to conduct their own number research, cultivating a rigorous search for truth – for numbers are not wishy-washy. It’s either right or not!
